My 3 Step Formula For Productivity Success

formula for productivityThere are not many topics that affect every single human being on earth but productivity happens to be one of them.

Think about it.

Everyone in society needs to get more done and be more productive but it’s easier said than done.

Whether you are employed in the workplace or running your own home based or internet based business, you need to have control of your tasks and projects to develop.

In this post, I hope to help you achieve more of your daily tasks and to do this, I will share with you my 3 step formula for productivity success that enables me to get more things done in the working day!

Everyone Seems To Struggle With Productivity

I’ve noticed that everybody seems to struggle with productivity.

Absolutely everybody.

Even productivity consultants seem to struggle with it!

What should be simple (making To-Do lists and checking things off) is far more difficult than people think.

I’ve learnt over time that it’s all about having habits and systems to do things. A productivity system can only work if it’s followed systematically and on a regular basis, otherwise it all falls apart.

3 Ways To Improve Productivity – My Formula!

1. Do Things In “Bursts” – One of the methods I use to be more productive is to do tasks and projects in bursts.

What do I mean by this?

Basically, you should decide to do a task for 45 minutes to an hour.

This is a great thing to do because instead of switching tasks and multitasking (which tends to decrease your efficiency and focus), you can just focus on one single task for a short amount of time.

You can get far more done in a shorter amount of time if you simply focus like a laser beam on it, and don’t get distracted by anything else.

This is because you’re working at your most efficient capacity.

Also, according to research human beings are best at doing things in blocks of 45 minutes. Any time after this results in diminishing returns.

2. Block Out Your Day – Another productivity tip I want to give you is to block out your day at least the night before.

Before your head hits the pillow the night before, have an idea of what tasks and projects you will be working on the next day.

You need to know what the focus of the next day will be.

For example, it might be that before lunch you need to decide to write a blog post, and this has to be completed by 12:30. That’s another important thing. Set deadlines for everything you do. It will make yourself accountable especially if you work from home and/or run a home based business.

Your tasks will vary.

It might be that you need to do the laundry at 6pm when you arrive home.

It might be that you need to work on a specific project.

When you block out your day like this, it is incredible for productivity!

It means you can have tasks that are completely blocked out before lunch, and you’ll have different tasks for after lunch.

The reason this is good is that you’re not letting the day run you.

You’re running the day, and you’ve got a schedule to work by. This is especially important if you are self-employed and needing to be more productive. A lot of self-employed people fall into the trap of not having a clear structure to their day.

If you do this the night before you start your day, it trickles into your subconscious overnight whilst you’re sleeping and you can start the next morning with a clear plan!

Note: If you scroll to the bottom of this post, you will see the video I have shared. Go to minute 17 where they cover “Scripting your day” for more tips on this.

3. Remove All Distractions – The next thing I strongly recommend is to remove all distractions.

I know this sounds obvious but there are a lot of things that need shutting down and removed from view.

You need to have Skype shut down so that people can’t bother you.

Get rid of Facebook during the day as it is one of the biggest productivity killers out there. Your friends can survive without you “liking” their photos for a short time!

You need to have email shut down, whether this is Microsoft Outlook or something else.

On the point of email, it should be dealt with in “bulk” at specific intervals. You shouldn’t be responding to emails in “real-time” as you will never get anything done.

So, don’t have your email client open and response to the “new email ping sounds”. This will distract you and disrupt your day.

I’m sure you get the message now.

Everything should be shut down apart from the current task at hand.

Oh, it also helps if you haven’t got too many tabs open on your computer.

Finally, I learnt a lot of these methods from the masters. To see what I mean, watch the dan kennedy marketing video below where Dan discusses fundamentals of time management with Dave Dee as part of their Renegade Millionaire TV series. Must watch!
