What Is Avon Exactly?

On February 15, 2018, Avon made an announcement that it’s officially leaving its business operations in both Australia and New Zealand at some point before 2018 is over.

It’s unclear how many Avon representatives are currently in New Zealand, but it’s estimated that Australia has over 21,000.

This news seems to have come out of nowhere, and what’s even stranger is Avon’s reasoning for this move.

Emails have been sent to affiliates in both Australia and New Zealand, but even so, it seems like most people heard about the news thanks to a post that was shared on the AvonAUSNZ Facebook page.

There are currently more than 10,000 comments on the announcement post on the Facebook page, and it seems as if most people are “disgusted” by Avon’s decision here.

Avon made an official statement to a media outlet in Australia, with a further explanation being the following:

“As part of the company’s strategy to return Avon to long-term sustainable profitable growth, the focus will be on markets with the greatest potential for future growth to support its vision of becoming the world’s leading social beauty company.

“In line with this, after a thorough deliberation on our performance, the direct selling conditions in the market, and potential for growth, we have considered all options for the business and it is with much sadness that we are announcing our decision to exit the Australia and New Zealand markets.”

Avon Scam

However, perhaps most importantly, Avon fails to address why the company wasn’t profitable in the two countries with more than 21,000 people marketing and selling Avon products.

Right now, we possibly address Avon’s move as a result of it wanted to focus on “markets with the greatest potential for future growth.”

The year of 2013 saw a whopping 88% of Avon’s $10 billion revenue that year come from markets overseas (not in the United States), and in early 2016, Latin America was home to about half of Avon’s entire revenue.

Furthermore, Alexa rankings indicate that 44% of all traffic to Avon’s website comes from Brazil. As for second place, Mexico comes in with 9.1% of all traffic.

Avon’s seeing growth in some countries, but it’s still facing its fair share of struggles. Sales revenue in China dropped by a massive 41% following a bribery scandal that resulted in a settlement of $135 million.

Also, while it obviously can’t be proved, it would appear that Avon is focusing its time on markets where it can put a greater emphasis on recruitment without getting in trouble.

If the company is choosing to pull out of two countries despite having well over 21,000 affiliates selling its products, it seems like something else is happening behind the scenes that Avon doesn’t want to shed too many light on.

It’ll be interesting to see where Avon goes from here and if it chooses to pull out of other markets as time goes on, but in any case, this is where we’re at.

For any of my readers that are Avon affiliates, how does this news strike you?
