How To Deal With Overwhelm

life is overwhelmingOverwhelm is something that we all have to deal with from time to time, and it can take many different forms.

I see a lot of my students suffer from overwhelm when they are trying to build their business, and that is the inspiration for this post. I want to teach you how to deal with overwhelm, whether it’s within your personal or work life.

Life Is Overwhelming At Times

Life can be very overwhelming at times and it is something I’ve suffered with in the past.

I think that we all suffer with it when we are living out lives.

It’s when we feel that life is getting on top of us and we can’t achieve enough things to give us the satisfaction we need.

I think one of the reasons we feel this “dissatisfaction” is because we see lots of different areas of our life that need sorting out, and we’re really not sure which area to sort out first!

Having too many choices can be paralyzing.

And being emotionally overwhelmed can be a serious long term problem as well, easily leading to stress, sadness, anxiety and even depression.

How To Manage Overwhelm By Prioritizing

There’s a powerful method that I learned from my business mentor recently and I want to share it with you.

When you start any given year, you should not have more than three key priorities for the year.

Now, I know that may not seem like very many but that is the whole point!

The point is to have less priorities for the year so you can actually focus on achieving them, and stand a much better chance of achieving them.

I should make it clear. These 3 Core Priorities are not meant to be tasks.

These are specific life areas and/or projects that you want to work on.

For example, the three key priorities might be running a triathlon, growing your business by 50% or learning how to play Golf.

Those are all key areas.

Or there could be other priorities that are more “personal” to your life, like spending more time with your family, improving your relationship or giving back to others.

Don’t Take On Too Much At Once!

The problem I see with most people is that they have too many priorities going on at one time.
And of course life is overwhelming if you have too much “on your plate”.

There are only so many hours in the day.

So, instead of having three priorities for the year, they’ll have lots and lots of priorities (dozens even).

And the more priorities you have, the less chance there is that they will get done.

So, I recommend that you just have three for the year.

Allocate Your Life Priorities Across The Year

The next thing you need to do (and I also learned this from a mentor) is to break up these 3 priorities into specific key tasks for each day, week, and month.

For each week, you should have specific goals that you want to get done for that week.

Now let’s break it down to the day.

For each day, you should have 5 core tasks that you want to get done for that day.

Now, this will be completely different depending on what you are trying to achieve.

If you’re running your own business (could be an online business), it’s obviously going to be different than if you’re working at a job for someone else.

But the point is: don’t try and do too much in one day as this leads to being easily overwhelmed.

You’re not going to be able to do three gym workouts in one day.

It’s going to have to be spread out a bit, and it’s got to be realistic.

Because if you set goals too high or in a short time frame, it’s going to be very difficult for you to keep to them.

And that’s why people get overwhelmed.

It’s because they take far too much on.

Less is more.

Think of ways that you can free yourself from specific “shackles” and that will you give you more time to focus on the things that matter.
