What The Heck Is Stella & Dot?

Stella & Dot recently made an announcement regarding how its affiliates can sell products. As of January 3, Stella & Dot brand ambassadors have the ability to sell products across three different niches — including Stella & Dot’s Ever (beauty products), Keep Collective (accessory products), and the main Stella & Dot fashion lineup.

Before this change happened, affiliates for Stella & Dot were only able to sell for one brand and that was it. Now, though, affiliates have a lot more at their disposal to sell to interested customers.

Commenting on this big news, Stella & Dot Founder and CEO, Jessica Herrin, said:

“Our brands are separate from a consumer perspective, but our true reason for being as a company is to empower the modern woman with the ultimate side gig, so she can untether from [work] hours that just don’t work for her.”

Stella & Dot touts that it currently has over 30,000 ambassadors/affiliates, and to ensure the new cross-selling feature works as smoothly as possible, the company is launching a social retail app called “Mimi.”

Through Mimi, ambassadors/affiliates are able to create and share pages of products that are curated by them — giving ambassadors the power to choose which products they want to focus on at any given time.

Once ambassadors have their pages created and ready to go, the pages can then be shared with customers through social media, email, texting, etc. by just sharing a URL.

Again, Jessica Herrin chimes in:

“It’s like Pinterest had a baby with Polyvore and Shopify,” said Herrin. She said ambassadors’ boards could, for example, promote a custom skin-care routine or a total fashion and beauty look for an evening out.”

Looking at the three brands Stella & Dot has, each one comes with a $199 starter kit that includes products and marketing materials to help you get started with your selling business. According to the company, you can expect commissions ranging from 20% all the way up to 40%.

During 2019 alone, Stella & Dot says it spent well over $50 million in an effort to become better-equipped and positioned in the digital landscape. That’s a big investment, but it’s one Stella & Dot clearly sees as an important one.

Stella & Dot has not shared any numbers for its annual profits/sales, but the company has said that it’s paid out commissions of more than $500 million since it originally launched a few years back in 2004.

And, on top of all that, it’s worth remembering that Stella & Dot also has a retail presence in 26 brick-and-mortar locations thanks to a partnership it reached with popular retailer Nordstrom.

Per Jessica Herrin:

“[Ambassadors] are the brand; it’s their authentic recommendations that drive conversion in their circles. By taking away the all complexities, we are thinking about what’s in it for the customer.

A lot of women would like to build a large [social] following, but its the nano-influencer or everywoman that drives sales. Mimi is for women who don’t have swipe-ups or have time to create their own content regularly, so we are empowering their recommendations and brand for them.”
