What Can You Tell Me About Thirty-One Gifts?

When it comes to the world of retail, something that’s been a constant through the years is the importance of giving your customers and clients as much personal attention as possible. This is often a factor that helps certain companies to stand out among the rest, and it’s a point that’s been very prevalent with Thirty-One Gifts ever since its inception.

Cindy Monroe is the Founder, President, and CEO of Thirty-One Gifts, and according to Monroe —

“I actually think we have the advantage here over Amazon or e-commerce.”

Monroe goes on to say, “We already understand how to connect with customers. Our biggest risk is going too far the other way into digital. The problem in online is it’s hard to create that personal experience. For us, if we do online, it’s still an online party where (sales) consultants are personalizing the product, helping (customers) create a gift.”

Lastly, Monroe says Thirty-One Gifts has “understood the customer experience for a really long time.”

Customer experience/service is a huge factor that all retail entities should focus on, and with Thirty-One Gifts, the company uses its battalion of sales consultants that help to sell its items with a personal touch.

Products are mainly sold through house parties that Thirty-One Gifts affiliates host at their homes, and this has served as the backbone for Thirty-One Gifts since it first started.

Recently, Thirty-One Gifts saw itself go through a decent amount of growth that was shortly followed by a decline and then another resurgence in traffic and customers. Monroe was recently the keynote speaker at an annual sales conference for Thirty-One Gifts over at the Nationwide Arena, and here Monroe touched on the company’s recent activities.

Thirty One Gifts Scam

Thirty-One Gifts first launched in 2003, and in 2013, the company reached its peak revenue point at $763 million. A year later in 2014, that revenue number dropped all the way down to $643 million, and then fell once more in 2015 to $516 million. Thirty-One Gifts saw yet another drop in revenue last year in 2016, but the company has yet to disclose just how much more was lost during this time period.

Per Monroe, “We [Thirty-One Gifts] were growing so fast we didn’t necessarily see it coming. We weren’t sure it was a bump or new trend.”

After two straight years of losing profits, Monroe made the decision that changes needed to be made. Essentially what it came down to was Monroe deciding that Thirty-One Gifts “can’t keep spending like a $700 million company.”

Following Monroe’s decision, Thirty-One Gifts made a huge cut to its sales force — dropping to a total of 60,800 of sales consultants this past August. Compared to 120,000 consultants in 2012, that’s a massive decrease.

In 2015, Monroe reportedly began talking with sales leaders from all across the country to see what steps could be taken to get Thirty-One Gifts’ numbers back up and on track.

According to Monroe, “We were asking lots of questions. There wasn’t one silver bullet.”

Monroe continues by saying, “The advantage we had in bringing together our leadership team was we were talking with our leaders out in the field. It was just a collaboration we’ve never had before.”

After three consecutive years of losses, Thirty-One Gifts finally began to focus once more on growing the company back to where it needed to be.

Monroe states, “The real turnaround started last fall. We were able to have a growth season for the first time in three years. Now that we’ve turned around, we can focus on building that momentum.”

During the sales conference that I mentioned above, Monroe informed consultants that Thirty-One Gifts was finally debt-free in 2017.

Although there’s still work to be done, that’s a huge step in the right direction.

Along with all of this, Monroe also understands that Thirty-One Gifts needs to adapt to the new ways of doing business.

“(We’ve) got to stay current with social media, with products. We can’t sell same prints and products that we did 10 year ago.”

Thirty-One Gifts has already made considerably progress, and it’ll be interesting to see if Monroe can keep this new momentum going. There’s no doubt that the company has gone through some rough patches, but it looks like things are going better than they have been over the past few years.
